Visualization Tools
- What to look for in your data
- Search for studies of prairies whose characteristics interest you and find e-mail addresses for student groups collecting data for those studies.
- Analyze data by looking at summaries and graphs for your study, other current studies and studies from previous years. Use the tutorials to learn how to move information from the web pages to spreadsheets and other documents.

- Studies from Previous Years (starting in 1992)
- Comprehensive Data ( Summaries, Charts, Quadrats and Excel Files from 2007 - present)
- Longitudinal Graphs for Fermilab 16B and West Chicago 2C and All Prairies - how prairies change through the years. (Be patient when loading!)
- Enter data in the Fermilab online database.
Plant Identification
- Model actual data obtained by students at Fermilab. You can also construct your own virtual quadrats.
- Plot the change in the diversity of prairie plants as they bloom over the entire growing season.
- Compare the root systems with above-ground growth of prairie plants.
Data Collection
- Use these resources to help you identify prairie plants.
Tutorials
- The procedure used by students taking data at Fermilab.
- Fermilab data collection sheets
- Determining the percent cover with a grid.
- Recording the number of plants found/percent cover on a quadrat data sheet. Your teacher will make a sheet like this tailored to your prairie.
- Samples of student data taken at Fermilab.
