Introduction
e-Lab: An online collaborative student investigation of real-world issues.
Educational Characteristics:
- Projects are problem-based, student driven and technology dependent.
- Students reach beyond classroom walls to explore data with other students and experts and share results, publishing original work to a world-wide audience.
- Students can discover and extend the research of other students, modeling the processes of modern, large-scale research projects.
Technology Characteristics:
- Students ONLY need a web-browser. (There may be some additional software for data acquisition, but that is not a requirement to participate.)
- Projects use emerging grid computing technologies.
- Data is derived from professional research databases. In some cases data may be student-collected and uploaded.
- "Under the hood" option allows students to see the grid techniques employed and/or write their own analysis tools.
Standard Framework: Facilitates teacher use; they call it "one stop shopping."
- Templates ensure that project and teacher pages have a similar look and function.
- Student pages have some standard requirements and functions but page design is flexible.
