Build a Recreation Center Using Geometry

Target Audience:

This project can be implemented at any high school grade level where students have knowledge of geometry.

Project Goals:

Students work in groups to design specific parts of a recreation center. By choosing their area of interest, they will research and apply concepts of geometry.

Learner Outcomes: Students will demonstrate their ability to:

• use established criteria to create a report and design applied to the recreation center.
• an understanding of "real-world" application of geometry through their projec.
• use creativity and several resources to gather and synthesize their research.
• use technology as a research tool.
• organize their research in an organized and appealing manner.
• make an oral and visual presentation of their findings using established criteria.

Alignment with Standards: (National Standards):

This project meets three of the Mathematics Standards for high school level as determined by the Mid-continent Regional Educational Laboratory.

• Standard 1: Effectively uses a variety of strategies in the problem-solving process.
• Standard 3: Uses basic and advanced procedures while performing the process of computation.
• Standard 5: Understands and applies basic and advanced properties of the concepts of geometry.
