There are a variety of resources available for conducting your literature search. Some of the most useful resources are those available through the Glenbrook South IMC. In addition to the books which have already been pulled and placed upon reserve, there are numerous electronic resources available there.
Electronic Sources in the IMC
The following resources are available from the IMC home page; many of the magazine/newspaper databases and library catalogue systems can even be accessed from home using an Internet connection.
EBSCOhost
- a commercial on-line service which allows keyword searches of magazine, newspaper and educational databases.
- names and sources of articles pertaining to various subjects can be found; the availability of such sources at the IMC is indicated; the full-text version of many of the articles are also available.
- easily understood advanced search methods are allowed by means of a graphical interface.
- the service is easily accessible from any computer in the school and even accessible from home by use of the appropriate password (see your teacher for the EBSCOhost password).
Firstsearch
- a commercial on-line service which allows keyword searches 17 general and subject-specific databases.
- use the WilsonSearch option to retrieve full-text versions of magazine articles.
- use the NetFirst option to do keyword searches of Internet resources and view annotated descriptions of relevant sites and direct links to such sites.
- the service is easily accessible from any computer in the school and even accessible from home by use of the appropriate password (see your teacher for the password).
Topic Search
- a commercial on-line service which allows keyword searches of magazine and newspaper databases.
Newspapers on the Net
- a commercial on-line service which allows keyword searches of many popular magazines (Chicago Sun Times, Chicago Tribune, USA Today, New York Times, etc.).
Networked CD-ROMS
The IMC has a variety of PC-based networked CD-ROMs which can only be accessed from the computers on the north end of the IMC. Such CD-ROMs include the McGraw Hill Encyclopedia of Science (highly recommended), McGill's Survey of Science, and NewsBank's Science Source.
Search IMC's Catalogue Systems
Using the link from the IMC home page titled Glenbrook South Library Catalog, you will have opportunity to search the DYNIX catalog system to see IMC holdings. This search can be done from any computer within the school and even from home (if you have a TELNET connection). If you are not sure if you have a TELNET connection, then merely try it to see.
Search Glenview Library's Catalogue Systems
Using the link from the IMC home page titled Other Library Catalogs, you will have opportunity to search the catalogue of the Glenview Public Library. This search can be done from within the school or from home if you have a TELNET connection. If you are not sure if you have a TELNET connection, then merely try it to see.
