lauram: Welcome.

Eileen: Hello Sherri was coming but is not home from school yet

¥¥¥ Sharon has joined. ¥¥¥

Eileen: Hi Sharon

lauram: ok - this chat will be easier to join late than others

SharonIve: Hi, I was booted out by my provider.

Sharon: Hi Eileen

lauram: This session is to let you explore the new support pages we created over the summer.

Jeff: I know this is confusing but I am Sue not Jeff. Nancy and Vicki, and Gail's user names appear to be invalid and i was only able to get on with Jeff's name. Can we just use one computer ?

lauram: Sure - you can just use one computer if you like.

Jeff: Thanks.

Eileen: Hi Sue

lauram: no problem. Welcome Sue. Sharon - sorry you are having connections problems.

Sharon: We have changed pages based on your input to make things easier.

¥¥¥ Sherri has joined. ¥¥¥

Sherri: Hi just got in from Open House at school!

lauram: We have specifically added pages to make it easier for you to conduct discussions on LInC related topics

Eileen: I;m changing my provider because it keeps bumping me...but not yet...Hope I'll be ok

lauram: welcome sherrii

Eileen: Hi Sherri

lauram: So you don't have to do as much legwork

Sherri: hi all

Jeff: Should we pull up our website, or are we going to tour the new engaged learning sites?

SharonIve: Laura, do my best to hang in there. Don't worry if booted again, I'll get back on. Can't wait to see what you have done.

lauram: We hope these save you lots of time.

lauram: ok. We can do this one of two ways.

lauram: we'll take votes.

lauram: Sharon White is co-leading with me. She has taught many LInC courses and helped making the new materials

lauram: (as well as Stephen Meehan, Sharon Gatz, Chris Marzsalek, and Cheryl LaMaster)

Sherri: wow!

lauram: way 1 is we can give you a tour of each section.

Jeff: Hi Sharon G - glad you're there. It's nice to hear your 'voice' tonight.

lauram: way2 is we give you an overview, then give you time to explore and report back how you might use the materials or any changes you would request

Sherri: I vote for #i

Sherri: #1

Eileen: #1

SharonIve: #1 is fine

MardeanB: #1 sounds fine

Jeff: #ok 1

lauram: ok - way1 wins

lauram: bring up your browser and go to

lauram: /lincon/chain/

lauram: let us know when you are there.

Eileen: there

Sherri: there

SharonIve: I'm there.

MardeanB: OK

Sharon: I am too.

Jeff: we're there

lauram: great. This is the chainlinc home page.

lauram: The topics for each meeting and the logs of all the meetings will be posted here.

lauram: Last week's session is linked already.

lauram: Go ahead and click on the "Tour of New LInC Online Materials" link.

Jeff: Thanks, for posting the sessions!

lauram: no problem. We got lots of requests.

Sherri: I like this concept of a centralized springboard for continuing ed!

Eileen: wow!

lauram: Ok - the first section is "coming soon"

lauram: These are in progress so you know what's coming

lauram: We thought (and you told us) the fishbowl was too slow.

lauram: sharon I - fishbowl was an "Acted out" project discussion during live chat

¥¥¥ Stellema has joined. ¥¥¥

lauram: So we have automated it. It has a couple things I need to fix.

lauram: Do you have Javascript enabled in your browsers?

Sherri: You all have been working your fingers to the bones, eh?!!

Eileen: yes

Jeff: do we open up fishbowl, or is this a brief overview tour and we're to come back and do a detailed tour later

lauram: don't open it quite yet.

Jeff: How do we check for java script?

lauram: Do you know if you have javascript enabled in your browsers?

MardeanB: Yes, Java is set

Sherri: I think so. It is the MJR (mac) type

lauram: that sounds ok. in a moment click on the link.

lauram: It will pop up a new window and start playing the script.

SharonIve: Yes, I think so.

Sherri: I sometimes get error messages

lauram: you have to scroll down when it gets to the bottom.

lauram: go ahead and try it and let me know if it works for you.

Sherri: It worked

Sherri: something about Cathline

lauram: Do you see a "play".

Jeff: yes, it works, but we can't get out until the conversation is complete...

SharonIve: I've got it.

MardeanB: Works great!

Wed Sep 29 18:17:31 1999

SharonIve: Neat!

lauram: You should just be able to come back to the chat window and let it run its course.

Eileen: Do I need sound?

lauram: We did this partly to save time and partly because not everyone is using the same chat tool - so you only need a web page for this.

lauram: no sound is needed

Eileen: ok

lauram: Did it not work for anyone?

Sherri: Wow, so our participants can see the script?

Eileen: yes

lauram: Sounds like it worked. That is good to hear.

lauram: ok - the next thing is we are in the process of re-doing all the evaluation forms.

lauram: for 2 purposes

lauram: The evaluator has analysed the winter98 results and determined that we can remove some questions

Jeff: is there a way to pause, or escape the fishbowl discussion??

lauram: So we are trying to make the forms shorter

lauram: Jeff - there is no way to pause - but you can run it as many times as you like.

Eileen: I did run into a problem in fishbowl

lauram: You can also see the whole thing at the end of the chat.

lauram: Eileen, I think it stops before the end.

Eileen: I clicked on the URL and went to a page then jumped back to the lesson

lauram: I have to fix that - which is why it is under "coming soon"

Eileen: thanks

lauram: So we are trying to make the forms shorter.

Sherri: When i clicked the "close box" there was an error prompt "...some script may not..."

Sherri: then I simply closed that error box and hit the "back" button...no problems I can see

lauram: We are also going to add a menu to the top of each form so your participants can pick whether they are from the "Detroit class" New Hampshire class" "Holland class" ...

lauram: Ok, sherri thanks for the error report.

lauram: The form will then send you e-mail with an HTML file of their input. So you don't have to change the form for your use/.

lauram: Does that make sense?

Sherri: yes

SharonIve: Yes

MardeanB: That sounds great

Eileen: ok

lauram: Ok any questions about this section?

MardeanB: No

Eileen: no

SharonIve: not right now

Sherri: scenario, on use

Sherri: please

lauram: scenario on use - for the fishbowl

Jeff: Can we now check the different links now, or just scroll down the 'what's new section?

Sherri: yes

lauram: you could ask your participants to view the "play" of the project discussion before you have a project proposal discussion with them

Sherri: My teachers link to and watch the script then...

Eileen: I lost the original page...no back button

lauram: as an example of a project discussion so they know what to expect and do not interpret any comments personnally.

Eileen: found it

Sherri: Eileen close the java window

lauram: Eileen - it popped up a new window, in the other window you should be able to use the back button.

Sherri: A simulation! I get it

Sharon: Sherri correct

Eileen: got it thanks

lauram: scenario for form use - you have your participants use the forms and select Detroit. Then you don't have to write your own.

lauram: ok - next section. This is the biggie.

Sherri: I love this already!!!

lauram: The instructors sent eachother e-mail before chats with strategies for teaching each LInC session.

lauram: We have put all this info on web pages - so you can use it as a lesson plan or cheat sheet when you conduct your course

lauram: You don't have to use it to the letter

lauram: it is one example of how to approach it

Sherri: that way, we are sure to hit all the key points...sort of like fool-proofing

lauram: it is easier to start with something than nothing.

lauram: yes - exactly.

SharonIve: you bet!

lauram: It also contains a sample message to send to participants to prepare them for the chat.

Sherri: You have improved this and made it easier for us to keep on trying to run our projects

lauram: This message has some places where you have to "fill in the blank" for your course.

lauram: "your state's name here"

lauram: sort of thing.

lauram: These are in green.

lauram: But the samples should make it easier for you than composing from scratch.

Eileen: I'm lost...where are we

lauram: You may cover more than one topic during a discussion, so you can mix and match these for your needs.

Sherri: "form maker"

lauram: We're about to look at the next section

lauram: I am giving an intro.

lauram: for the discussion resources home page, so you know how these pages were inteneded to be used

Sherri: click on it now?

lauram: We consider these "building blocks" you can use.

Wed Sep 29 18:32:35 1999

lauram: why don't you take 15 minutes and check some of these out. We have one for every topic we have covered in LInC.

Sherri: ok

lauram: different topics are requested from different classes, so you can use the ones you did.

lauram: ok - go for it. come back with questions, comments, ...

Sharon: Eileen have you found the page?

lauram: oops. I meant "so you can use the ones you need".

Eileen: /lincon/fac/discuss/index.shtml

Eileen: Is this the place?

lauram: yes. you've got it.

Eileen: ok

Sherri: On the Chat overview page: the green text is not active or hyper. So we use the format to create our own version or the green is enlivened later?

Sharon: Sherri, correct

lauram: Do you mean the orientation page?

Sharon: The green is for your info

lauram: "orientation: introduction to course"??

Sherri: The /lincon/fac/discuss/tech/com_bboard.shtml

lauram: You can copy and paste the message for participants into your e-mail.

lauram: Then you must replace the green stuff with the info for your course.

Sherri: correct? later live green or use as is?

Sherri: Gotcha

Sherri: I think you've done a great job.

lauram: For example - different teams are using different bulletin board software

Sharon: Sherri, the green is for you to put your input but use the rest as is.

Sherri: I off to another page

Sherri: I'm...

SharonIve: I like Option 1 under Constructin Indicators of EL Discussion Plan for teams who work together well.

lauram: So you need to change the green to the name of the BB software you chose.

Sherri: righty-oh!

lauram: and sign your own name at the bottom.

lauram: We have had people send off e-mail taht still said "sign your own name here" at the bottom.

lauram: I thought it was funny.

Sherri: Sound like something I might do...until now

lauram: Thanks Sharon I. We prefer option 1 because participants are constructing rather thab "being told"

lauram: lecturing about constructivism is kind of problem philosophically :-)

SharonIve: I think it offers a great opportunity to individuals to reflect.

lauram: But you know your own audience - and if they have no experience whatsoever to draw from - you may want to use option 2.

lauram: hopefully in most cases, option 1. Thanks I agree that the reflection is helpful.

SharonIve: Option 2 is a great backup.

lauram: Mardean - the sample e-mail messages were added because of a comment Doug made on his evaluation e-mail to me.

MardeanB: I'll let him know....thanks

Eileen: Wow ...so much work is already done for us!

Sharon: Our hope was to make it easier for you when you are running your own classes.

Sherri: Excellent work, ideas, and use of evaluation information you received

lauram: we hope so - we found it too much work ourselves to be writing these plans while the class was in progress.

Sherri: I think I will be spoiled if I ever have to move MI and TEch to another server :-(

Wed Sep 29 18:47:50 1999

Sherri: Will we still get to come back hear...to access this wealth of info?

lauram: You can always use and link to these materials no matter what server you are using for a project.

lauram: please link to them (do not copy them).

Sherri: Cool!!!

Sherri: OK

lauram: [sheepishly] we haven't had a chance to proofread yet, so there are typos :-(

Eileen: I plan to print these pages out and review them off line...That helps me to keep track

SharonIve: Hey, Laura and Sharon, I really like Evaluating Web Sites and Information Found There: Discussion Plan. This should help a lot.

Sharon: Great, thanks for the positive feedback.

lauram: funding willing - We're hoping to make a new facilitator book that has a print out of all this.

lauram: we're shooting for January.

Sherri: The project checkpoint is one (amonst many) BIG helpers for me

lauram: Sharon I - we were working on the fishbowl when you asked about it. Sorry I did not respond sooner.

lauram: Sharon I - There is also a plain text web page of the fishbowl at /lincon/el_fishbowl.shtml (in case you have anyone that has trouble with the javascript)

lauram: Sherri - about the tech plans like bulletin board

Sherri: yes

lauram: We tried to make the plans general - not depending on using COW or another specific tool

lauram: the questions the same (how do you post, how do you read) pretty much no matter what tool you've decied to use.

Sherri: It seems that it will work for our project

SharonIve: Good. I'm not sure whether our school computers have javascript.

lauram: Javascript is built in to Netscape and Explorer.

SharonIve: We do have Netscape so should be ok.

lauram: There is a configuration item where you can disable javascript. That's the only thing to watch out for.

lauram: Note that javascript is different than java.

SharonIve: OK

lauram: ok - do you want more time or do you prefer to continue?

Eileen: I didn't know that but I do know that things happen..Thanks for preparing us

Eileen: Continue

SharonIve: Go on.

MardeanB: Continue

Sherri: "How to Moderate a Chat" quite fine tips, I must say

Jeff: continue the tour

Sharon: Sherri, you can modify the plans if you need to fit your project. Just use the plans as a base.

lauram: ok. Thanks Sharon. agreed.

Sherri: right

Sherri: I like all of this, because it like having you all hear helping to think through the details

lauram: Ok, the remaining links on the page are a write up on how we thought you might want to use these plans.

lauram: tips on moderating an online discussion

Sharon: Sherri, thanks for the input. We are always there.

Sherri: excuse my typos...I'm tired

lauram: the sample annotated chat is cool in that it shows you what the facilitators intentions are - and it uses the first chat as an example - so this helps you in starting out.

lauram: don't worry about typos. I don't care. better to keep the converstion flowing.

Sherri: ok

Jeff: Is there a listing of the engaged learning sites done by W99 and Spr99 to add to our cadre of resources?

lauram: The last link, Sharon will explain (since she wrote it)

lauram: Jeff, If you go to /lincon/

Sharon: This link is on reflection prompts. The prompts were written to be used as needed. You can use them face-to-face through totally online. To use as feedback from your participants, as a check, to modify your class, etc.

Sharon: We have used all the topics in

lauram: and click on "projects" in the navigation bar, there is a link for lots and lots of projects. Not all are model projects - so you have to be discriminating

Sharon: the Linc courses but not all the subtopics.

Jeff: OK, we'll check them out, THANKS!

Sharon: Go to /lincon/fac/discuss/reflections.shtml and let me know when you are there.

Sherri: Laura, we could use some of these for an assignment, then...el indicators (what's missing, compare and contrast)

MardeanB: ok

SharonIve: ok

lauram: Yes. These are the prompts we used in COW for your class and other classes.

Sherri: there

lauram: (webboard for you Sharon I)

SharonIve: ok

Eileen: ok

Sharon: You don't have to use COW if you do not have it. You can use email or in class time for these.

Wed Sep 29 19:02:54 1999

Sharon: We tried to list several ideas under the topics to get you started. You can always add your own.

Stellema: ok

Sherri: looks really good to me!

Eileen: looks good

lauram: We thought it was too cumbersome if you had to go back into our COW to find examples of prompts to use - so sharon gathered them all here.

Sharon: Thanks, we found that these were good ways of obtaining feedback from our participants.

SharonIve: That's handy!

Sherri: The standardized helping resources are going to ensure content mastery at some level...

Sherri: no matter if our inservice is abbreviated or not! Excellent instructional design

Sharon: The green is used again to let you copy and paste the prompt but personalize it for you and your group.

Sharon: Are there any questions about the prompts?

Eileen: Thanks!

Sherri: not yet

Sherri: seems pretty clear right now

MardeanB: No -- the variety and range of topics are going to be helpful

Sharon: Please email me if you do have any questions. Thanks for your positive feedback.

Jeff: PNNL asks, is there more to the tour or may we work with Karen W on our website revisions?

Sherri: Sharon, where?

Sharon: One last thought, we found it easier to set up some prompts at the beginning to get things going. You might also try it.

Sharon: My email is swhite@kiwi.dep.anl.gov

Sherri: Thank you

lauram: Jeff - There is a bit more. say 20 minutes.

Eileen: thanks

Sharon: Also, include some responses.

SharonIve: Can you elaborate on prompts at the beginning?

Eileen: Did you set the prompts before each class or before the series?

Sharon: It will help them to use this as a means of communication ...

Jeff: Ok, we'll stick around

SharonIve: Oops, just now see what you're talking about.

Sharon: if you start some conversations first ...

Sharon: it will help bond your participants.

lauram: ok Thanks Sharon.

lauram: Eileen - we put the prompts in the bboard approx one week before they are "due"

Eileen: still not sure what you mean...give me an example...bonding them?

Sharon: Eileen, for example, have them tell about themselves ...

lauram: The exception is - the ones for tech help that are opened ended - we always put those in at the beginning so there is a place to ask for help 24x7 starting at the beginning of the course. That's a good question eileen.

Sharon: this way the rest of the group sees what they might have in common with others.

lauram: like grade level, subject, location, hobby ...

lauram: maybe even picture.

Eileen: I see...So we know them as real...

lauram: ok - let's go back to the what's new page.

lauram: exactly eileen.

lauram: you should have to hit your back button twice

lauram: I am going to introduce the remaining items and then let you explore them altogether.

Sherri: there

Eileen: mine is gone...

Sherri: there, and you're right 2xs

lauram: If you are offering the lInC course, the task/timeline poge lets you know our experience as to when certain things need to be done to make the course happen.

Stellema: ok

lauram: it is a nice checklist

Eileen: ok

lauram: eillen: /lincon/chain/

lauram: then click on "tour of new linc materials"

¥¥¥ SharonI has joined. ¥¥¥

lauram: Sharon I, we are back on the tour of new materials page

SharonI: Ok, just got booted again. I'm on the What's new page.

lauram: The next two links are to help with finding what you need in the facilitators materials

lauram: since we added so many pages - we made a new organization

¥¥¥ SharonIve has quit saying: Ping timeout for SharonIve[dialup089.softhouse.com] ¥¥¥

lauram: It is the same way the LInC participants materials are organized.

Wed Sep 29 19:17:57 1999

lauram: 5 sections, a home page for each section describing all the resources in the section, navigation bar at the top of every page with links to each section

lauram: and a "table of contents" which links to all pages in all facilitator sections.

lauram: you should be able to get to any facilitator page in two mouse clicks

lauram: The last two pages are for your participants

Jeff: looks good

lauram: one is to give resources for finding funding

lauram: and tutorials about grant writing

Eileen: I like this

SharonI: Nice

Sherri: icing on the cake!

lauram: The last one (which was made in response to something Eileen sent us)

Eileen: Can't remember?

lauram: has good and bad examples of proposal elements like hook, best use of technology, student direction, authentic task ...

lauram: it gives 3 good examples, 3 bad examples

Eileen: I remember

lauram: and the 3 "now you decide examples"

Sherri: excellent

lauram: it was felt this would help people that did now want to look at a whole proposal before and after

lauram: but instead concentrate on working on a particular element

lauram: There is also a "teacher's edition" of this page.

lauram: which lists reasons why some are labelled good and some not.

lauram: we hope this will help your participants.

lauram: before you go, please make sure you see that table of contents and the "good and poor" examples page.

lauram: I will stick around a bit for questions and comments

Sherri: After this, I am ready to look for additional funding to run our MI & Tech again!

Eileen: What is the hook lesson under?

SharonI: Definitely. To be able to see both good and bad examples side by side is terrific.

lauram: Jeff - one new thing that was added since PNNL took the course

lauram: is animations for using Fetch and WS_FTP

Sharon: Eileen look at /lincon/el_prop_elements.shtml#anchor35096

lauram: these are like watching a movie that shows every mouse click needed to usethe Fetch or WS_FTP software.

lauram: if your participants are using this software, the animations can be very helpful.

lauram: they are at:

lauram: /lincon/movies/ftp/

SharonI: They are. From someone in the winter 98 class.

lauram: So browse are your will. I am hoping to expand this page more later.

lauram: I will stay around for a while. Thanks for coming. It's great to "see" you all again!!

Sherri: Thank you soooo very much, all!

SharonI: Thanks, Laura and Sharon for all your hard work!

Sharon: See you next time. You're welcome.

MardeanB: Thanks for all the work you did after the academies this summer!!

Sherri: I'll come back to browse at a later date (in the near future)

Sharon: Great!

Sherri: good night all

lauram: Your very welcome (from the whole team)

Eileen: Thanks!

¥¥¥ Sherri has quit saying: Hasta la vista... ¥¥¥

SharonI: Like the thumbs up/thumbs down on Authentic Tasks. Kind of a Siskel and Ebert approach.

Sharon: Glad you liked it we will pass it to the rest of the team.

lauram: Chris did that page.

SharonI: Again thanks. I'll be sharing with Lynn and Chad at school tomorrow.

Jeff: Yes, PNNL says THANKS!!! for all your hard work, our job will be easier. How soon will this chat be posted?

lauram: it is a fun page.

Eileen: Now my task is ro match what I think I'm doing with all this...

lauram: in about 20 minutes

SharonI: Tell Chris it will be fun to have participants do.

Sharon: Sharon, Jodie says HI.

Eileen: Bye for now...

¥¥¥ Eileen has left. ¥¥¥

lauram: Bye. thanks for coming.

SharonI: Yes, I heard you had met Jodie

Jeff: Bye, from PNNL

Sharon: Bye.

lauram: You'll have to RELOAD the page to see the new chat log link.

lauram: Sorry Jeff - you already told me you were sue.

SharonI: Very enthusiastic!

Wed Sep 29 19:32:58 1999

lauram: have a good night

Sharon: Bye for now.

MardeanB: Bye -- good night all!

¥¥¥ MardeanB has left. ¥¥¥

lauram: Janet - you still around?

lauram: any questions?

Stellema: yes-I'm talking with sharon-but any pointers on 1 1/2 hrs on engaged learning?

lauram: ok great. continue. I don't want to interrupt.

Jeff: PNNL is gone, bye

¥¥¥ Jeff has left. ¥¥¥

lauram: 1 1/2 hours is hard. I'd shoot for awareness of what is possible and what the Internet can add that is not possible without it. Maybe looking at some project examples that relate to their subject area to give more concrete ideas.

Wed Sep 29 19:48:05 1999

lauram: Sharon - do you have suggestions?

Stellema: i plan on going over EL and then letting them look at projects for ideas-not a whole lot of time I know but at least it's a start!

lauram: Sharon - do you have any ideas how they could come out of the session with something concrete they could use?

Sharon: Janet also is going to have them share their best experiences. I mentioned about the possibility of having some of the teachers share about EL

lauram: that's a good idea.

Stellema: thanks guys-the stuff look awesome!

Sharon: If they can know how to make their lessons more engaging this could get their students more involved.

lauram: Thanks Janet.

Sharon: like knowing how to write a hook.

Stellema: maybe do some stuff on writing hooks-or too much at once?

Stellema: oops-we think alike !!!

Sharon: Janet yes and it should be a good start.

lauram: in 1.5 hours, time will be very tight

Stellema: there's a chance I can do one again in teh spring...maybe a continuation.

lauram: I can show you an "old" page that one of our people used for a short session.

Stellema: yes!

Sharon: maybe some models that they can look at on their own time later .. they will feel they are getting something to take back

lauram: Her philosophy was to arrange it as a frequently asked questions list where people could browse on whatever question interested them with the instructor available to answer questions.

Sharon: Laura, that sounds good

lauram: looking at her page, I would more heavily include project examples (like Sharon said).

Stellema: sounds great-I quit out of everything so if you can just give me the site I'll check later

lauram: one minute to find it.

Stellema: thanks

Sharon: Laura is great at keeping the "old"

Sharon: materials available

Stellema: hey-why reinvent the wheel?

lauram: It is very old, some links might not work, but gives a general idea. It was geared toward adminstrators though.

Stellema: that's OK-I'll get an idea

lauram: so you might have to change the focus, but use similar philosophy about being the guide.

Stellema: ok

lauram: /linc/resources/questions.html

lauram: Don't abandon your idea of having participants share with eachother or having a person who has tried a project tell them about it.

lauram: These are more "live" so they would help as well to be part of your session

Stellema: no I won't -I'll use that as an intro...build on what they know

Stellema: thanks got it and I'll check it out tomorrow

lauram: ok have a good night

Stellema: good night

Sharon: Great keep us informed

Sharon: Bye

¥¥¥ Stellema has left. ¥¥¥
