This project has not been used before and no particular emphasis of English in aviation has been addressed.
Grade Level: 10th grade
Subject: English
Learner Outcomes: Students used Standard English in speaking and writing. Students learned the skills and concepts of research. Student read works of merit, both fiction and non-fiction. Students participated in discussions, small group and whole class.
Student Task: Students were asked to research a topic that they had chosen from a list given to them by the teacher. The final product was a research paper that they presented to the class and that was graded by the teacher. Within the research process, the teacher assigned a work of literature to the students that related to what they were learning in their research.
Teacher Role: The teacher generated a list of topics and matched each topic with a supporting piece of literature. The teacher asked the students to choose a topic from the list and gave the students information about the process of research through lecture and handouts. The students were allowed class time in the library to complete some of the research. The teacher was available to answer questions. The teacher gave the students study guides for the various pieces of literature and expected the students to be able to answer questions regarding the literature.
Grouping: Students mainly worked individually, but some conferred with other students regarding the process of research.
Hook: The research paper was a requirement for all tenth grade students. Some were interested in the teacher assigned topics.
Student-Directed Learning: Any project or assignment was teacher directed. The students were allowed to extend their investigation, but the teacher set the parameters.
Use of Technology: The students were required to use and document two Internet sources. The final draft had to be typed.
Assessment: The teacher scored the written product using a point system for each requirement of the research paper. The teacher used a point system to grade the oral presentation of the product. The teacher gave the students a standardized test over the assigned literature after the students completed the study guides and participated in small group discussions about their particular piece of literature.
