The Aviation Project did not exist before the Fermilab LinC Online Class. Some of the Learner Outcomes could not be accomplished. Key elements of library associated with the Aviation Project were accomplished by teacher instruction.

Grade Level: 10th grade

Subject: Library Research Skills for Careers Class

Learner Outcomes:

1. Students were able to locate books, reference materials, and magazines using the library card catalog and the Readers Guide to Periodicals.

2. Students researched careers and will report on the findings.

3. Students accessed information in the School Library using print sources such as the California Occupational Guides, the Occupation Outlook Handbook and the Encyclopedia of Careers.

4. Students used listening, speaking and writing skills effectively to enhance learning.

Student Task: Students were required to listen to a lecture about book cataloging, school computer use policy, and procedures for finding information from books.

Teacher Role: The librarian was responsible for giving students information on appropriate library use and guidelines related to searching for information. The teacher directed students to locate information on a career of choice. The librarian directed students on the use of library resources. The teacher directed students on how to organize the information for the written report.

Grouping: Students came to the library individually, in small groups, and/or large groups with their classroom teacher. Students were helped individually or instructed in a large group setting.

Hook: Tenth graders graduate in two years. Find a career for after high school and write why and how you would pursue this career. Students needed to know how to access information that was useful in their classes.

Student-Directed Learning: The only student-directed learning was by the student's own initiative to come to the library individually and search for required information needed for class .Students reviewed career resources and chose a career of interest.

Use of Technology: The teacher and librarian used an overhead projector. Students used the copy machine and a stand alone PC in the library to prepare their written reports. There was a limited number computers for student use.

Assessment: The teachers graded the written reports. There was no assessment made by the librarian. The librarian made sure students used the library facilities and equipment appropriately.
