Grade Level: 2nd/3rd multi-age
Subject: Social Studies, Language Arts
Learner Outcomes:
Student Task: Students read, as a class, a chapter regarding cultures from their Social Studies book. Students were involved in a discussion with the teacher regarding cultures and were given an outline describing what their research papers should include. The students found information in the library media center and took notes on their index cards. Ater having their cards checked by their teacher the students began writing their report being sure that they had 3 sources. The rough draft of this report was reviewed by the teacher and the student wrote up their final report.
Teacher Role: The teacher determined which cultures the students researched, what their project had to include/look like and evaluated various aspects of the students projects as they worked on them (index cards, rough draft and final paper).
Grouping: Each student was responsible for completing the research and report on their own. This was not a group activity.
Hook: The students were told that this was a project, how many days they would have to work on it and that their papers would be graded and posted in the hallway.
Student-Directed Learning: Students really didn't have much choice in this project. The teacher directed which culture they would research, what needed to be included in the report and the process.
Use of Technology: Technology was not needed to complete this project. Students might have used the Internet to find information.
Assessment: Students were graded on three aspects of their project - the index cards and note taking, content of the report and writing mechanics of the report.
