Tangerine Improvement Society

Welcome to Tangerine! The Tangerine Improvement Society (TIS) was organized by the women of Tangerine on April 13, 1909 for "the improvement in every way of the interests of the town."

In March 1911, Mrs. Addie Earle offered the Society a lot for a public hall. This lot was on Lake Street, On April 5, 1912 a new hall was finished ready for use at a cost of $423.00.

On May 7, 1924, the Charter of the Tangerine Improvement Society was granted by the state of Florida, making TIS the oldest continuous not for profit organization on record in Orange County.

On July 16, 1937, TIS received a deed from the Bidwell estate for Block #5, bounded by Wright Avenue, Huron Street, Scott Avenue, & Oak Street, except for the three lots at the southwest corner of the block owned by the 100+ year old Tangerine Community Church. The Tangerine Water Company, which was established in 1944, is just north of the Church on property leased from TIS.

On May 28, 1972, the old TIS hall on Lake Street burned to the ground. Immediately after the fire, the citizens of Tangerine began a drive for a new hall, under the leadership of Cecil S. Johnston. The new building, located on the property just east of the Church on Wright Avenue, was completed on September 17, 1973 at a cost of $33,830.12. It is an attractive, spacious and well equipped building.

On November,1, 1981, the Board of Directors voted to name the new building Johnston Hall in honor of "Cece" Johnston, who was an outstanding community leader.

TIS meets in Johnston Hall on the first and third Monday of each month from November through April and the first Monday only from May to October. These meetings are a great time to build relations with your neighbors and help the community maintain its cohesiveness.

The first meeting of the month is a business meeting and the second meeting is a social/informative style meeting. Both meetings begin 2/ a Pot Luck supper with members bringing a covered dish, their place setting, and a donation of $2.00 a person. Dinners begin at 6:30 & meetings at 7:30 ending around 8:30. If you can't make it to the Pot Luck, come to the meeting!

Annual membership is currently only $8.50 a person renewable every January. You will receive our monthly newsletter and be kept apprised of events in our community.

In the northeast corner of Block #5 and north of the TIS building is the Tangerine Park. When this block was deeded to shuffleboard, and cook out facilities were installed and make available.

In October 1997, a committee was formed to begin restoring Tangerine Park with the financial help of Orange County. This is a work in progress. It currently has shuffleboard, volleyball, cook out facilities, and a covered pavilion with picnic tables and children's games upon completion.

TIS encourages Tangerine residents to take serious interest in this park & our community, so that it may be improved as a real asset for life in our town. Get involved! Be active in your town!

The Tangerine Improvement Society will be happy to accept any donations and to be remembered in your will.
