Five-Minute Point Count - Live Animal Data

Enter the study site QUIETLY. Spread out and sit quietly for five minutes. Record observations of all the things you see and hear. Make brief notes of insects, spiders, scat, evidence of mammals and birds you see or hear. This data collection helps you focus on all the critters in the habitat study site. You can repeat this data collection at different times and places throughout the study area. Watch for animal signs as you walk along. Be sure to record the time, weather conditions and date in your journal or five-minute point count data sheet.

List the name (or make a drawing) and count of live critters you observe as you sit quietly for five minutes.
