Background

  • The end of the Cold War resulted in the Strategic Arms Reduction Talks (START) process.

  • The START process resulted in smaller stockpiles of nuclear weapons (about 20,000 down to 3,000 to 5,000).

  • Dismantled weapons resulted in a Special Nuclear Materials (SNM) surplus.

  • The Fissile Material Disposition Project (FMDP) was created by DOE to reduce the nuclear danger associated with this surplus SNM.
