STEM Family Night Planning Workshop

September 25, 2013 – 7:00 p.m.–9:30 p.m.

ed.fnal.gov/sciadv

Is your organization (school, PTA, library or co-op) planning a STEM Family Night? Attend this workshop to learn what Fermilab can provide to support your event. This is your opportunity to become a trained facilitator for the Hands-on Science exhibits which can be delivered free of charge. Gather information from a wealth of resources that will help run your STEM Family Night. Attendance by two facilitators is required to borrow the Hands-on Science equipment. Register online through our Science Adventure pages.

Illinois Science Education Conference

October 24-26, 2013

http://www.ista-il.org/conference.htm

Stop by the Fermilab Education Office booth. Come to our "Connecting Students with Scientists, Engineers and Technicians" session on Friday at 3:30 PM. Several Fermilab program instructors have a "Science at the Core of Reading" session on Saturday at 1:45 PM,  We hope to see you at ISEC.

Scholarships for Teacher Workshops, Science Adventures and Transportation

ed.fnal.gov/scholarships

Funding for professional development for teachers and enrichment for students such as doing science in the field is becoming increasingly difficult for schools. We also know that not all families have the opportunity to enroll students in science and math enrichment classes. Fermilab Friends for Science Education offers scholarships for teachers to attend summer workshops, assist with field trip transportation expenses and provide scholarships to families for student classes held at Fermilab. The online scholarship application form will be available from mid-November through mid-March for workshops held during summer 2014 and field trips for the school year 2014-2015. Applicants will be notified in April 2014.

Science Adventures

ed.fnal.gov/sciadv

Science Adventures, informal classes for students in grades PreK-10, continue on Saturday throughout the school year. See the home page link for Science Adventures for a listing of current classes. Interested in being a Science Adventure instructor? Contact Susan Dahl.

Classroom Presentations

ed.fnal.gov/demos

Fermilab volunteers offer presentations to enhance your classroom curriculum. If your school is within reasonable driving distance of the Lab, Fermilab scientists, engineers and technicians bring presentations on physical science topics to your students. Presentations are geared toward students in grades 2 through 12 and are free of charge to classrooms. Select a topic related to your curriculum, a few optional days, and read the "Additional Information" link regarding how many presentations and students can be accommodated.

What we’re reading

What we're reading on the web, in journals and good books.

Is reading in the science content area becoming more important to you as your school implements the Common Core? The Teacher Resource Center collection has a great deal of new informational text (non-fiction, biographies and fiction sparking science).

A new space for K-8 math and science core curriculum allows curriculum committees a nice workroom to compare the latest STEM curriculum materials. ed.fnal.gov/trc
