Fermilab Office of Education and Public Engagement: Teacher Workshops

Engage your classrooms with Fermilab Science!

$50 Registration fee for all workshops except QuarkNet Teacher Workshop (free)

Elementary School Teachers (K–5)

Phriendly Physics: Science and Engineering (grades K–2)

Learn how to integrate science and engineering into your K–2 classroom by incorporating the scientific method and engineering design process! Teach your students how to think like a scientist and engineer by investigating Forces & Motion, Light & Color, Matter and Its Interactions, and Electricity & Magnetism. All of the activities from the workshop can be done in the classroom, many with inexpensive and/or household materials. Earn PDH and graduate credit hours through University of St. Francis.

June 12–13 from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM US Central Time, in person

Phriendly Physics (grades 3–5)

Participants not only learn physical science concepts, but also start thinking like scientists through investigation of Forces & Motion, Light & Color, Matter and Its Interactions, and Electricity & Magnetism. Participants will also learn how to help students frame and explore their own questions. Earn PDH and graduate credit hours through University of St. Francis.

June 14–16 from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM US Central Time, in person

Mid-Level Teachers (grades 6–9)

Beauty and Charm at Fermilab (grades 6–9)

Beauty and Charm is an engaging, exciting, exploratory physical science program in which teachers learn how scientists work, and how we can observe things we can't see. Activities introduce your students to the world of particle physics, and to the concept of science as a process of constant, ongoing learning. Participants will also receive materials for classroom activities. Earn PDH and graduate credit hours through University of St. Francis.

June 26–30 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM US Central Time, in-person

Energy and Ecosystems: Prairie, Water, and Woods (grades 6–9)

Three ecosystems in one workshop: prairie, water and woods! Investigate the dynamics of nature and ecosystem services to reveal interdependent relationships among organisms within ecosystems. Learn biological principles and how to collect ecological data to teach students to investigate, assess and compare these different habitats like scientists. This provides students with authentic experiences using scientific practices and crosscutting concepts from the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core Language Arts and Math. Earn PDH and graduate credit hours through University of St. Francis.

July 24–28 from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM US Central Time, in-person

High School Teachers (grades 9–12)

Summer Secondary Environmental Science Institute (grades 9–12)

This four-day course, offered at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), will deepen understanding of soil composition and formation, ecology and restoration, aquatic ecology, and climate change through field and laboratory activities. These NGSS aligned activities will enhance your classroom experience and connect to the authentic ecological science of Fermilab with support from expert Fermilab ecologists. Appropriate for a high school level Environmental Science or AP Environmental Science class. Please dress appropriately as we will be outside for a portion of each day. Earn PDH and graduate credit hours through University of St. Francis.

July 17–20 from 8:30 AM to 3:15 PM US Central Time (in-person)

QuarkNet Teacher Workshop 2023: Neutrino Data Workshop

The Fermilab QuarkNet Center 2023 Teacher Workshop will focus on using neutrino data in your high school physics classroom. This workshop will be excellent preparation to implement a MINERvA or NOvA masterclass with your students in the spring of 2024. Registration coming soon!

August 1–3 from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM US Central Time (in-person)
