Fermilab Office of Education and Public Engagement: Teacher Workshops

Engage your classrooms with Fermilab Science!

Special County-Wide Institute Day Workshop

Tour Fermilab as a part of this unique experience while exploring Fermilab's cutting-edge physics research through the lens of STEM education. Along with the tour, the workshop will include investigating hands-on exhibits at the Lederman Science Center and NGSS-aligned activities that will introduce your students to Fermilab's science (particle physics, quantum science, neutrino physics, and engineering). Please note that a REAL ID compliant document, such as an enhanced Driver's License or passport, is required for anyone 18 years of age and older in order to be onsite at Fermilab.

Date & Time: March 1 from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM US Central Time, in person

Elementary School Teachers (K–5)

Phriendly Physics: Science and Engineering (grades K–2)

Learn how to integrate science and engineering into your K–2 classroom by incorporating the scientific method and engineering design process! Teach your students how to think like a scientist and engineer by investigating Forces & Motion, Light & Color, Matter and Its Interactions, and Electricity & Magnetism. All of the activities from the workshop can be done in the classroom, many with inexpensive and/or household materials. Earn PDH and graduate credit hours through University of St. Francis.

Registration: $50. 12 PDHs. One graduate credit available from the University of St. Francis for an additional $100.

Date & Time: June 10–11 from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM US Central Time, in person

Phriendly Physics (grades 3–5)

Participants not only learn physical science concepts, but also start thinking like scientists through investigation of Forces & Motion, Light & Color, Matter and Its Interactions, and Electricity & Magnetism. Participants will also learn how to help students frame and explore their own questions. Earn PDH and graduate credit hours through University of St. Francis.

Registration: $50. 12 PDHs. One graduate credit available from the University of St. Francis for an additional $100.

Date & Time: June 12–13 from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM US Central Time, in person

Insects at Work in Our World (grades 1–2)

Discover the world of insects and inspire future entomologists! Explore three diverse areas—wetlands, prairie, and woodlands—in search of insects and their relatives. Learn to identify and sort insects and investigate how they grow, change, and perform the jobs they do to benefit our environment. Make your own insect collection for your classroom. Using observation, science inquiry and journaling, explore the fascinating world of insects with your apprentice entomologists. This is an NGSS aligned, multidisciplinary inquiry-based program including field trips to Fermilab. Earn PDH and graduate credit hours through University of St. Francis.

Registration: $50. 12 PDHs. One graduate credit available from the University of St. Francis for an additional $100.

Date & Time: June 17–18 from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM US Central Time, in person

Mid-Level Teachers (grades 6–9)

Beauty and Charm at Fermilab (grades 6–9)

Beauty and Charm is an engaging, exciting, exploratory physical science program in which teachers learn how scientists work, and how we can observe things we can't see. Activities introduce your students to the world of particle physics, and to the concept of science as a process of constant, ongoing learning. Participants will also receive materials for classroom activities. Earn PDH and graduate credit hours through University of St. Francis.

Registration: $50. 35 PDHs. Three graduate credits available from the University of St. Francis for an additional $300.

Date & Time: June 24–28 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM US Central Time, in person

Energy and Ecosystems: Prairie, Water, and Woods (grades 6–9)

Three ecosystems in one workshop: prairie, water and woods! Investigate the dynamics of nature and ecosystem services to reveal interdependent relationships among organisms within ecosystems. Learn biological principles and how to collect ecological data to teach students to investigate, assess and compare these different habitats like scientists. This provides students with authentic experiences using scientific practices and crosscutting concepts from the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core Language Arts and Math. Earn PDH and graduate credit hours through University of St. Francis.

Registration: $50. 35 PDHs. Three graduate credits available from the University of St. Francis for an additional $300.

Date & Time: July 29–August 2 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM US Central Time, in person

High School Teachers (grades 9–12)

Summer Secondary Environmental Science Institute (grades 9–12)

This five-day course, offered at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), will deepen understanding of soil composition and formation, ecology and restoration, aquatic ecology, and climate change through field and laboratory activities. These NGSS aligned activities will enhance your classroom experience and connect to the authentic ecological science of Fermilab with support from expert Fermilab ecologists. Appropriate for a high school level Environmental Science or AP Environmental Science class. Please dress appropriately as we will be outside for a portion of each day.

Registration: $50. 35 PDHs. Three graduate credits available from the University of St. Francis for an additional $300.

Date & Time: July 15–19 from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM US Central Time, in person
