Fermilab offers a variety of internship programs for high school, undergraduate and graduate students, secondary school teachers, and professionals. Working alongside our scientific, engineering, computing, and operations experts, our interns support and advance particle physics and accelerator research. Internship opportunities are available for both national and international applicants.

Technician Education for Careers out of High School (TECHS)

A work and hands-on experiential learning opportunity for Illinois high school rising juniors interested in pursuing technical fields upon graduating high school.

VALOR (Veteran Applied Laboratory Occupational Retraining) Program

During the summer months, our VALOR program invites JROTC high school cadets to participate in valuable hands on training experience in the technical field.

Accelerator Engineering Fellowships for Underrepresented Minorities (ASPIRE)

ASPIRE provides immersive learning experiences to students who are historically and contemporarily underrepresented in accelerator engineering fields, including Black, LatinX, and Indigenous identities, and women.

Business Intern Program

The Fermilab Business Intern Program provides opportunities for business, accounting, economics, policy, and computer science students to contribute to Fermilab’s scientific mission by supporting general business operations for the laboratory as well as working on particular projects in business systems, accounting, and information technology.

Community College Internships (CCI)

Summer technical training experience for community college students. CCI is sponsored by the Department of Energy, Office of Science.

Fermilab Environmental Management Internship

Program offers undergraduate freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors including Community College students, majoring in the environmental field (environmental studies, environmental management, environmental engineering, environmental science, or geoscience), the opportunity to conduct real world environmental compliance activities.

Fermilab and Brookhaven Summer School Exchange Program

The Fermilab and Brookhaven Summer School Exchange Program (FBSEP) is a unique opportunity for undergraduate freshmen majoring in STEM fields to participate in a summer school experience at both Fermilab and Brookhaven National Laboratory.

LBNF/DUNE in South Dakota FSCF InternshipUndergraduate engineering internship for students majoring in mining and related fields and are interested in working at a major underground construction project or business students interested in learning more about construction procurement and management.

Helen Edwards Summer Internship

A ten-week summer internship for students majoring in physics and engineering at universities in Europe.

Lee Teng Internship

Accelerator science and engineering internship designed to attract undergraduate students to the exciting and challenging world of particle accelerator physics and technology.

Summer Internships in Science and Technology (SIST)

Undergraduate sophomores and juniors majoring in physics, engineering (mechanical, electrical and computer), materials science, mathematics and computer science conduct research with Fermilab scientists and engineers.

Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI)

Sponsored by the Department of Energy Office of Science, undergraduate physics or engineering majors work with scientists or engineers on projects at the frontier of particle physics research.

Quantum Computing Internship for Physics Undergraduate Program (QCIPU)

Undergraduates students majoring in physics and who are interested in quantum computing for the simulation of physics are invited to apply. In this three-week online-only program, participants will gain hands-on experience programming for existing quantum computers using Python and Qiskit.

SQMS Quantum Undergraduate Internship

The SQMS Quantum Undergraduate Internship places undergraduate sophomore and junior physics and engineering majors with an opportunity to work with SQMS Center scientists and engineers on projects at the frontier of scientific research in quantum science and technology.

URA-Fermilab: Undergraduate Women in STEM

This program engages women science and engineering undergraduate students from under-represented groups to conduct research at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in fulfillment of its mission, concluding with full-time employment at the laboratory.

VetTech Internship Program

Military veterans provide routine technical support for an assigned experiment or support group. The program assumes apprentices level expertise, general military experience and/or knowledge-based on academic study.

US CMS Undergraduate Internship

The US CMS Summer Undergraduate Research Internship Program seeks to address the under-representation of women and minoritized students in STEM fields, in particular Physics. It is a 10-week paid internship program, which offers female and minority undergraduate students an opportunity to perform a project under the mentorship of scientists working at the frontier of Physics at one of the 50+ institutions in the United States.
