Johann Fust

Copperplate engraving

Johann Fust was the financiér who made several loans to Gutenberg during the period the great inventor was perfecting the art of printing from moveable type. In 1455, Fust demanded repayment of his loans and, when rebutted, brought a lawsuit against Gutenberg. Unable to repay his debt, Gutenberg was forced to yield much of his printing equipment and type to Fust, who then set up a printing shop of his own in partnership with Peter Schoeffer.
