Before students participated in the LInC project, writing assignments were completed using very different processes and procedures. In the past students were assigned writing assignments complete with writing prompts. They were usually offered 4 topics from which they could choose to write about one. Writing assignments, for the most part were completed in isolation using traditional reference materials including dictionaries and thesaurus.

In the past the teacher primarily acted as proof-reader and grader. The rubric used for project assessment was the property of the teacher and students were only permitted to peruse the rubric.

Students in the past merely saw writing as an assignment apart from everyday activities. They wrote to please their teachers. Their teachers were their only audience.
