- Immobilization: The surplus SNM will be dissolved
in glass or ceramic and stored directly in a waste respository
like Yucca Mountain.
- Similar to leaded crystal glassware.
- Immobilizing SNM reduces the possibility
of dissolved SNM finding its way into an undesirable situation
(critical mass, water table, etc.).
- Borehole: The surplus SNM (either directly or in an immobilized
form) will be placed in a deep (4 km) borehole and sealed up.
- Site selection is a signficant challenge.
- The technologies required for borehole disposition
are very mature.
