LLNL proposes two disposition technologies: immobilization and borehole.

  • Immobilization: The surplus SNM will be dissolved in glass or ceramic and stored directly in a waste respository like Yucca Mountain.

    1. Similar to leaded crystal glassware.
    2. Immobilizing SNM reduces the possibility of dissolved SNM finding its way into an undesirable situation (critical mass, water table, etc.).

  • Borehole: The surplus SNM (either directly or in an immobilized form) will be placed in a deep (4 km) borehole and sealed up.

    1. Site selection is a signficant challenge.
    2. The technologies required for borehole disposition are very mature.
