Cryogenics Show, Mr. Freeze of Fermilab (2-8)
This assembly-style show demonstrates and involves students in the fascinating field of supercooling. Fermilab engineers use liquid nitrogen to supercool magnets for least resistance; other industries use supercooling too. Learn about this cool field.
Preparing for the Presentation

Length of time: 40-50 minutes

Room preference: Gym or auditorium

To help make a Cryogenics Show run smoothly, we ask the following:

  1. Make sure the presenter has exact directions to your school and any parking and delivery information.
  2. The Cryogenics Show should not be "directly" under any photo or ion type smoke detectors. The individual requesting the show is responsible for checking with the facility manager about the best location for the show.
  3. If the floor is not carpeted, everyone must be seated in chairs or bleachers.
  4. If you have scheduled multiple presentations, we request that we stay in the same room for all presentations. It is time consuming to move the set up from room to room. We would like 10-15 minutes between presentations if possible. Two presentations would be a maximum request.
  5. Set up takes 30-40 minutes.
  6. We will need one medium-sized table in the front of the room.
  7. A wireless microphone and sound system may be useful to assure everyone can hear.
  8. This presentation is designed for students in 2nd-8th grades. Please let the presenter know of any specific related learning objectives you wish to address.
  9. Please review basic concepts with the students before the presentation. They will understand more if they have these concepts fresh in mind.
  10. The presentation is a memorable science show that will amaze the audience. The presentation can accommodate many size audiences. We want students to be engaged. Questions are encouraged.
  11. Some of the presentation includes loud sounds. The presenter will notify the audience prior to such demonstration, but anyone who may have difficulties with this situation should be advised.
  12. Teachers and/or aides should remain with students to assist with student engagement and management while you all enjoy the presentation!

Comments about the Visit

"I want to thank you and Fermilab in general for providing such wonderful programming for the public. It is a tremendous outreach, and children (and their parents!) get excited about science when they participate. Thank you especially for sending Mr. Freeze to the Sugar Grove Public Library."
