Objective: To Introduce The Internet

Students meet for computer resource in a lab once a week for a forty minute session.  During this resource period, the 7th & 8th grades students will be asked to complete the following activities.  Each activity should require two class sessions for completion. 

Special Note: Students will be asked to briefly review a Netiquette Website and the Chicago Public School's Acceptable Use Policy and Copyright issues.

Activity I: The teacher will direct discussion and usage of the following Internet terms:

Special Note: Explain to students using URLs, to find material without knowing the actual URL. Homework: Students will complete a worksheet which requires them to identify URL's and links for the following (students are to guess what the URLs might be)

2. Ronald McDonald House
3. University of Chicago
4.Teen Forum
5. UNCF
7. Nicklelodeum
8. Crown Books
9. Disney Store
10.??Your Choice - Whatever you'd like to surf  

Activity II:
Students will be asked to search the internet using their homework responses and log/print the results of the search for the top 10  queries.  The printout's are placed in the students "Rights" folder.  Special Note: Students will be asked to Briefly review a netiquette website and the Chicago Public School's standards for usage. Instructor redirects search to a specific legal or political sites to ensure students are on track for social studies assignment.  Legal Site, Law Firm,  and/or Political Site  

Activity III: Distribute a worksheet with names of the different search engines. Define and discuss types of search engines. Explain using keywords and wild cards - " " and, and/or in a search.  Have students search for and print (the first two finds) and identify their url for the following:

Bill of Rights
"Teen Rights" using three different engines.  
Add the word "student" and repeat search  

All search results must be printed and kept in a "rights" folder.  Teacher will check folders for content and redirect searches as needed.  

Activity IV: Distribute a worksheet to students with the properties of email

 

 

Briefly explain the properties and components.  Have students e-mail themselves and then email a "hello" message to a Legal Advisor.  Students will print and place all e-mail responses in their "rights" folder.  Teacher will check folders for content and redirect addresses as needed.  

 

Activity V: Students will be asked to outline their notes and write a brief summary using a word processing program.   Students must print a copy of their notes, outline and summary and place in their "rights" folder.  Teacher will check folders for content and redirect searches as needed. Studywords: Hyperlink, URL, hypertext, URL, search engines, web pages, web sites, homepage: Students will also use software such as Encarta, Grolier, Comptons, World Book to research material. Special Note: Briefly review netiquette and the Chicago Public School's standards for usage.)

 

During the first quarter, students meet for computer resource in a lab once a week for a forty minute session.  During this resource period, the 7th 8th grades students will complete  activities which require them to explore the internet through search engines, url addresses, and email.  Each activity should require two class sessions for completion.  Also, students will be asked  to maintain a folder, with a table of content,  which they must log all their search results, worksheets, notes, printouts from 3rd party software, and etal. Students will subsequently complete individual reports on their findings using a predesigned format (all reports are to be typed using a word processing program). 

The topics that are assigned to the students reflects, Constitutional rights. Students will research the Constitution to find out which right or rights is being violated or ignored. The following are given to to keep students focused on their topics:
