Glossary

The following is a list of terms frequently used in LInC Online. If you have a question regarding a general Internet term, then we would recommend using one of the existing Internet glossaries. These glossaries are updated frequently to include new terms as they pop up. You can also ask them to enter a term if you cannot find the one for which you are looking.

Marketing Manager's Plain English Internet Glossary*

*Participants should know how to navigate in a frames environment in order to use the Marketing Manager's glossary.

Alpha Version - the first released version of new software often made available over the Internet as freeware or shareware. Sometimes these versions are quite unstable. It is usually better to wait until the beta version is released.

Beta Version - a pre-release version of new software often made available over the Internet as freeware or shareware. Sometimes the applications have restrictions such as not being able to save a file.

Electronic Discussion Tools - communication tools using the computer and appropriate hardware. This may include synchronous or asynchronous discussions. It may utilize audio, video, and/or text. In the online LInC course there is an electronic discussion board, a real-time (synchronous) chat tool, and a listserv.

Facilitators - advises/mentors participants in engaged learning and project development, works with other facilitators and the lead facilitator to coordinate the course.

Lead Facilitator - one per course, coordinates the course, hires the facilitators, secures university credit options, instructor of record for university credit, moderates large group communications.

Participant - anyone who is taking the course.

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) - learning that is driven by a question or problem and uses various methods of inquiry research to address the question or problem (Beau Fly Jones, SchoolNet).
