Fermilab LInC Online

Genetics, Genomics, and Genethics

Getting Started

To get your thinking started, and also to develop a common ground, we ask that you explore these three resources before you arrive at the institute in July.

  • The National  Human Genome Research Institute's free educational kit.  Please order your own copy at http://www.nhgri.nih.gov/educationkit/.
  • Cracking the Genome: Inside the Race to Unlock Human DNA by Ken Davies.
  • Nova's Cracking the Code of Life episode.  It will air on PBS stations throughout the country on April 17, 2001 and will be available online at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/genome/ after April 18.

Starting on May 21, you will receive an email message from the Biology Institute facilitators, asking you to participate in an online conversation drawing from these resources.  The conversation will take place asynchronously on a Blackboard bulletin board and will go through a variety of issues designed to get you thinking about areas for further study this summer.  These discussions will also help the Biology Institute faculty to tailor the institute to your and your students' interests and ideas.

In order to get started with the discussion, go to the course home page at http://www.blackboard.com/courses/GENETHICS2001/.  The first time you visit this page you will be asked to register and will need to have the course registration password.  This password will be sent to you by email. If you have any problems with registration, please contact Bill Freitas at bfreitas@lawrenceville.org.
