Environmental Education

Dear Students,

I very much enjoyed our day together studying the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. You were a very attentive group and I was quite impressed with your understanding of the Watershed and how our daily actions can have an impact on the environment many miles away.

As I mentioned that afternoon, the Audubon Naturalists have worked with the Isaac Walton League in a program called "Save Our Streams" for many years. These are groups of volunteers who are concerned citizens and who have taken on the responsibility of regular testing of the water of many of the streams, creeks, and tributaries that empty into the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. They took on these responsibilities when the government was forced to make cutbacks in funding for watershed monitoring.

Although these are large groups of individuals, they are not able to monitor all of the streams in the watershed. Among the streams that we are not able to monitor is the Beach Street Tributary. I would like to invite you to take on this project as a class. This is a big responsibility. Data must be collected on a regular basis....all year long. In addition, the data must be posted and available for others to see and use. The protocol have been established and training is available through the Woodends Office of the Audubon Naturalists.

If you as a class are interested in becoming steam savers, please contact me at my office and I will make the arrangements for your class to be trained. If you do not feel that you as a class can take on this responsibility, I certainly understand.

Best wishes for a successful fourth quarter. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

June Hunt, Ph.D
