- Students began the unit by choosing a character or event
in history that they wanted to research. Each student selected
a topic, then met with the teacher to discuss the topic to see
if it met the guidelines and would be suitable for a fictionalized
account of history. The students were then given time to research
the topic using library books, magazines and the Internet.
As the students worked on their project, the teacher instructed
them in note taking, using note cards, citing reference sources,
and narrowing their topic. The Media Specialist helped students
find materials and individually worked with students on use of
the Internet, online databases, and CD-ROMs. Students were required
to hand in note cards and rough drafts over a period of weeks
so the teacher would be sure the students were writing their own
paper and that they were working on it. Students worked on this
assignment for 8 weeks.
During the research phase, students asked their teacher and
the media specialist for guidance and assistance. Once their material
was gathered, the students created fictionalized historical reports
based on their research. The papers created were assessed based
on proper citation, proper grammar, writing, content, and creativity.
