To submit a lesson plan to Best Practices II, it is required that the lesson plan format below is used. Please review the format and the explanation for each item. Please print this page and refer to it as you prepare your lesson. The lesson plan should contain enough detail so that any educator can replicate the lesson in the classroom.
TITLE: (Pick a title for your lesson that makes teachers want to look further)
Submitted by:
(Your Name)
(Your School Building)
(Your School District)
(Your School Address)
(Your e-mail address)
Subject Area: (Either Science, Social Studies or Thematic Lesson (list subject areas)
Intended Grade Level(s): (Lesson may be appropriate for more than one grade level)
Description: (In this area briefly give an overview of what this lesson is about. Give enough of a description so the reader can decide if this lesson is something they will be interested in.)
Narrative: (This is a very important part of the lesson plan. Explain why this lesson is, indeed, a "Best Practice." Tell why this lesson worked in the classroom. How did technology make a difference? Let others know why this is a successful lesson! The following points may be addressed:
- What made this lesson a success in your classroom?
- How did this lesson meet curricular goals?
- What did you observe in student response to this lesson that validated the success of students with this lesson?
- How does the lesson encourage Standards of Authentic Instruction; higher-order thinking skills, deep knowledge, substantitive conversation, connections to the world beyond the classroom?
- How does the addition of technology improve this lesson?)
Curriculum Benchmarks: Lessons should be focused. One lesson cannot address every Benchmark. Limit the Benchmarks that this lesson addresses to NO MORE THAN THREE Benchmarks. Pick those that are the major focus of the lesson. Below is an example of how the Benchmarks should be listed. Please use the exact Benchmark as it comes from the Michigan Curriculum Framework document. We recommend using the Michigan Curriculum Framework CD to find Benchmarks (searching makes it simple!)
MI.ELA.II.1.MS.2 Demonstrate their ability to use different voices in oral and written communication to persuade, inform, entertain, and inspire their audiences.
Explanation of the code (MI.ELA.II.1.MS.2)
MI - State: this will be the same for all Benchmarks as they are from the Michigan Curriculum Framework
ELA - Subject Area: this stands for English Language Arts, SOC = Social Studies, MA= Mathematics, SCI= Science
II - Strand (Roman Numeral)
1 - Standard (Arabic Number)
MS - Grade Level: HS = High School, MS = Middle School, EE= Early Elementary, LE = Later Elementary, E= Elementary
2 - Benchmark (Arabic Number)
Total amount of time for lesson: (Please list the total amount of estimated time this lesson will take to complete. Be specific, for example. This lesson can be completed by spending one hour a day for five days on the activities.)
Materials/Hardware/Software: (Please be detailed here. Remember others need to know resources required to replicate this lesson. Please include the name, manufacturer, publisher, etc. for all items. If lesson relies on use of a computer, please indicate if software is available for Mac, Windows, or both (multi-platform).
Teacher Preparation: (Explain what the teacher needs to do to prepare for this lesson. What technology skills are needed? What materials need to be prepared in advance? How long does it take to prepare materials? Be detailed enough so that anyone wishing to replicate this lesson will be able to.
Prerequisite Student Skills: (What skills do students need to complete this lesson? What level of subject area knowledge do they need? What technology skills do students need? How do you prepare students so they have the skills they need?)
Student Activities/Procedures: (Please be very specific. List and explain each activity and the amount of time devoted to the activity - usually in hours and minutes. Depending on the length of the lesson there may be one or more activities. Please be very specific about what students do in the activity. This should be the most detailed part of the lesson plan.
REMEMBER - TEACHERS NEED TO BE ABLE TO REPLICATE THE LESSON BY READING YOUR LESSON PLAN.
Include any materials to be given to students, activity sheets, handouts, etc.)
Assessment/Evaluation: (How is student performance assessed. Include any assessment instruments used with the lesson (e.g. quizzes, tests, rubrics, etc.) How is the impact of technology measured? Any information that can help another teacher assess student performance on the Benchmarks will be helpful.
Follow-up Activities: (This section is optional. Please detail any follow-up activities here. Remedial activities used can also be listed here.)
