Summary - Project Proposal

Project Title: Applied Scientific Method

Grade Level: 6th through 8th

Subject: Science

Learner Outcomes:

Students will be able to access information on the Internet

Students will become familiar with and perform the steps of the scientific method

Students will explore a variety of science principles

Students will demonstrate a newly acquired scientific principle expertise

Authentic Student Task: By using the scientific method as an approach, students will learn several scientific principles as they conduct simple experiments at home. They then will demonstrate their expertise for peers during class.

Hook: Students frequently enjoy "hands-on" activities. This project allows them to experience scientific investigation in a familar surrounding (their home) at at pace set by them using easily acquired materials.

Student Directed Learning: Students will perform activities, and will be allowed freedom to select alternate experiements from Internet sources as approved by their teacher. Also, students will collect, organize and analyze data, as well as demonstate a principle they have mastered for their peers.

Best Use of Technology: Students will use the internet to access the project expectations and directions as well as search for and select alternate experiments. After having demonstrated their experiment in class, they will post the results and photos of their work on the school's website.

California State Standards Addressed: Investigation and experimentation.
