Scenario

Class: Elizabeth Heiberger's Chemistry I class at J.D.Darnall High School. Class periods are 50 minutes. One internet computer is located in the chemistry classroom.

Time: The project will be near the beginning of second semester and last for about two weeks.

Curriculum/ Topic: Chemistry/Geology: Periodic table

Introduction:

The class begins with the teacher introducing some of the history of the periodic table.

The arrangement of the table is discussed using the previously discussed electron configuration of the elements. The following periodic properties are defined and their trends indicated:

The students are assigned to read then chapter.

At the start of class the teacher discusses the project on the families of the periodic table. The class will be divided into 8 groups. Each group will consist of of two or three students. The group is to research the elements in a family using library and internet sources considering

The students are informed that they are responsible for giving a 10 -15 minute presentation on their family. The teacher asks students for ideas on a rubric for evaluating the presentations. These are compiled and a final list is made for the set of rubrics. They are informed of when each group may work on the internet or in the library. At other times the students will have a the opportunity to work in the lab on a series of investigations relating to the chemical properties and trends in selected families. Each group will make a summary page of their work and place it on the internet.

During the following class periods, all student initially meet in the classroom to discuss any questions that may have occurred since the previous period. Students then break into their groups and proceed with their work. The teacher circulates answering questions, and offering suggestions where appropriate.

During the final two class periods, the students make their presentations and are assessed using the agreed upon rubric.
