Fermilab LInC Online Partnerships

". . . with the facilitators help we will leave with a plan that I think will be really useful for my staff. I don't think I have ever taken a class that has been so useful and so exciting and so relevant and so well done!!!"
-- Michigan LInC participant and facilitator

Scaling up is needed to meet demand.

Goal: Develop expertise/capacity with partners to offer LInC or similar professional development using LInC as a starting point/building blocks.

Partners need:

  • Long-term commitment to teacher education.
  • Administrative infrastructure to offer a course.
  • Technical infrastructure to offer an online course.
(Some free services for chat, bulletin board and listservs are currently available on the Internet.)

  • A team of three to five people including two to three K-12 educators and one or two agency staff, all of whom are receptive to the constructivist teaching philosophy and possess these basic computer, e-mail, and Web browser skills). Prior experience teaching an online course is not needed. Prior experience facilitating some type of staff development by one or more team members is desirable.

We are also interested in working with agencies that can target educators in underserved areas.

Summary: Partner teams will

  1. Participate in the LInC online course and face-to-face Facilitators' Academy.
  2. Design and teach a similar online course and academy with a "lead" facilitator from Fermilab who will handle the work of overall course flow in order to allow new facilitators to devote their energies to coaching participant teams.
  3. Facilitate and lead their next online course and academy with guidance from a Fermilab mentor.
  4. Offer their online course and academy on a regular basis for the next 3-5 years (after the period of the grant).

Partner teams may wish to tailor the course to suit their goals and audience. Examples of this might include changes such as adapting the online course to

  • Target preservice teachers.
  • Be completely asynchronous.
  • Add a multiple intelligences component.
  • Conform to a particular university's credit structure.
  • etc.
