The following data are adapted from the Federation for American Immigration Reform.

Almost 1/5 of people living in Montgomery County were born in other countries. People who move from one country to another are called immigrants.

• More than 1/3 of immigrants in Maryland came from other countries in North America, Central America, or South America, like El Salvador or Mexico.
• About 1/4 of immigrants in Maryland came from Europe, like Russia or Germany.
• Another 1/4 of immigrants in Maryland came from Asia, like China or Vietnam.
• The rest of the immigrants came from other places in the world, like Africa.

The top ten countries from which immigrants come to Maryland are:

• Korea - 21 thousand
• India - 18 thousand
• El Salvador - 15 thousand
• Germany - 15 thousand
• Philippines - 13 thousand
• United Kingdom - 12 thousand
• Jamaica - 12 thousand
• China - 9 thousand
• Iran - 8 thousand
• Vietnam - 7 thousand

About 17 thousand new immigrants come to Maryland each year.
