Were The Three Bears Robbed?
An Issue of Teen Rights
Teacher-Directed Activity
Students arrive in their 3rd period Social Studies class. They see on the board a written mandate from local school board that starting, September all students will be in school uniforms. This presents a heated discussion among the students. The teacher seized this opportunity to inform students about rights and the Constitution. The teacher calls the students to order and directs them to vocalize their concerns about uniforms. From the discussion the teacher presents several things to consider:
Why is their a need for uniforms?
Is this a right that you feel is being violated?
When is an individual's right subject to the rights of all?
Things To Do
You will be studying the Constitution Amendments through the use of fairy tale characters. Read the fairy tale assigned to you. Identify any rights that have been violated and then research the Constitutional amendments to support your findings.
For example, in the fairy tale, Goldilocks, was she within her rights to trod on public forest property? Did the bears, as members of an endangered species and a"natural" citizen, have their rights violated? Can your rights infringe upon others' rights? What role does government play in assuring that a citizen's rights are not violated? Does being aware of one's rights ensure they won't be violated?
List the rights in which your "clients" should have been afforded. Present both pro and con opinions. The purpose of having both a pro and con is to keep students focused on moral issues as well as legal ones. Research the actual Constitutional Document and other literatures that will help support your findings. Locate persons who can assist in answering questions via the internet. Use software that is based on the Constitution.
On Assignment
You will be given the opportunity to work in groups of five's. Choose teammates wisely because your grade is a group effort. In your group you will have four jobs. They are a surfer, recorder, reader and checker.
In this box, there are 6 fairy tales. One person from each team will come and choose a fairy tale. You may change your fairy tale among each other. You will first go to the internet to locate your story.
The tales to explore any constitutional violations are as follows: Click on your assigned tale. The Constitution is there as an available resource as you read your tale.
