Dear ___________and

Eighth Grade Social Studies Classes;

I am requesting your assistance in helping to collect data on students' opinions on their Rights as individuals and as students. We know that the first Ten Amendments to The Constitution are the Bill of Rights. They have played an important part in the shaping of our country. How important are these rights to you? Please list ten rights that you feel you have been given by the Bill of Rights. Focus on your life as a student at Newberry, as a citizen of Chicago and as a citizen of the United States. With these Rights come responsibility. What responsibilities are related to the Rights you specified?

Thank you,

M. Newman

Second phase of survey:

In the past years there has been discussion about recess for 7th and 8th grade students. If a bill was presented to the 'Newberry Congress', what steps would need to be in place to make the bill a law? Suppose Newberry had a Bill of Rights for each classroom and for the school. What would the bill contain? What would the school's constitution contain if one existed?

Take a look at our bar graph.
