Fermilab LInC Online

English Survivor Class

Unit Description before LInC

The Survivor Project did not exist before the Fermilab LinC Online Class. Some of the Learner Outcomes could not be accomplished. Key elements of English associated with the Survivor Project were accomplished by teacher instruction.

Grade Level: 10th grade

Subject: English

Learner Outcomes: Students wrote essays and summaries about material they had read. Students articulated orally English content before an audience.

Student Task: Students were required to take notes, do homework, and keep a notebook with all-important English concepts in it. They had an opportunity to practice their public speaking skills, write essays, and read both orally and independently.

Teacher Role: The teacher lectured and gave homework in the novel. Students wrote down key passages and reactions as notebook entries. The teacher lectured and assigned oral presentations and essays to be read publically and one-to-one.

Grouping: Students worked individually on their class work. There had opportunities to share their information from readings both in large and small group settings.

Hook: Students wanted to learn because the English content and labs were informative and interesting.

Student-Directed Learning: Any project or assignment was teacher directed. The student was allowed to extend their investigation, but the teacher set the parameters.

Use of Technology: Movies and videos were the only technological instruments used in the class.

Assessment: Students were assessed and graded at the end of each unit. Tests, some reports, essays, oral presentations, class participation, reading evaluation, and journals were graded use of a percentage scale.
