This project challenges the student(s) to build a model bridge from balsa wood and glue that will exhibit the largest strength-to-weight ratio possible. For successful completion of this project, the following tasks must be accomplished within the trimester grading period:
(1) A day-by-day assessment diary kept by each student as well as a weekly assessment of individual and group process
(2) A written report of 400-500 words on the history, strength components and design of bridges
(3) Construction of a model bridge using only balsa wood and wood glue and entering your model in the local bridge building competition
Created for the Fermilab LInC program sponsored by Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory Education Office, Friends of Fermilab, United States Department of Energy, Illinois State Board of Education, and North Central Regional Technology in Education Consortium (NCRTEC) which is operated by North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (NCREL).
