This project has not been used before within the Drafting Program. In the past I have had my students design and build towers using spaghetti noodles and marshmallows in an attempt to show the value of truss designs. The towers are built using the noodles for the support members and the marshmallows representing the connector plates. This type of project would illustrate the basic concepts of truss design, but it did little to show the actual advantages of truss strength in terms of the material-to-strength ratio. It is my hope that through the use of this project, the Drafting students will develop a better understanding of truss design, how trusses are used in the construction of bridges and how the basic design and location of a bridge impacts on bridge function.
