Office of Education and Public Engagement: Maureen Hix

Maureen Hix is an Education Program Leader managing the life science programs and leading the docents in the Office of Education and Public Engagement at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from California State University-Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music from DePaul University-Chicago.

Maureen has taught in Illinois and California, certified in Cooperative Learning and Gifted Education, with emphasis in Math and Science. She has developed differentiated curriculum in all subjects and in environmental studies for elementary students, and has served on state accreditation and school curriculum improvement committees in various school districts.

As a Fermilab docent, Maureen led field trips and tours and also founded a Junior Prairie Ranger/Eco Ranger environmental stewardship program for children. As education program associate, she scheduled tours and managed the Lederman Science Education Center front desk before becoming docent coordinator and leader of our life science programs.

Maureen is passionate about educating teachers and youth in the benefits of our natural ecosystems. She is a member of Fermilab's Ecological Land Management (ELM) Committee, Fermilab Natural Areas, and Fermilab Friends for Science Education. She continues to develop activities for teacher workshops and student field trips incorporating Next Generation Science Standards to make science accessible, authentic and meaningful to all, offering a deeper understanding and appreciation of our natural world.

Maureen teaches piano in her spare time.
